about

"This track includes one of those serendipitous moments, (that happened several times when putting together 'Pedalling In The Fast Lane'), when I happened upon Tony Benn's 1998 speech in Parliament prior to Iraq war II. I had written the string introduction to perhaps illustrate and highlight the utter sadness of war and wondered if that would be enough for the track. I then found that this speech fitted perfectly over this section both lyrically and timing-wise."

lyrics

"I'll finish just by saying this. War is an easy thing to talk about though not many people of the generation that remember it. The Right Honourable gentleman served... [?] and I never killed anyone but I wore a uniform. But I was in London in the blitz in 1940 living in the Millbank tower where I was born. Some different ideas have come in since. And er every night I went down to the shelter in Thames House. Every morning I saw Docklands burning. 500 people were killed in Westminster one night by a landmine. It was terrifying. Aren't Arabs terrified? Aren't Iraqi's terrified? Don't Arab and Iraqi women weep when their children die? Does bombing strengthen their determination? What fools we are to live in a generation for which war is a computer game for our children and just an interesting Channel 4 news item. Every member of Parliament tonight who votes for the government motion will be consciously and deliberately accepting there responsibility for the deaths of innocent people if the war begins as I fear it will."

Murder.
On Tuesday night I gave the order for British forces...
Murder.
...to take part in military action in Iraq. Tonight...
Murder.
...British Service men and women are engaged in air, land and sea. Their mission...
Murder.
....to remove Saddam Hussain from power and disarm Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction.

We don’t want your war [No, no, no, no]
We don’t want your war
We don’t want your war
We don’t want your war

Murder
War; what is it good for? Absolutely nothing!
So many casualties: so many tragedies
So little sympathy for people caught in tyranny.
They have to take down an oppressive regime so hope invades with an M-16?
What about the human cost? How many lives lost?
Essential casualties to champion democracy?
Murder
Conflict, incursion, skirmish, invasion.
Legalised murder, truth assassination.
No such thing as a military solution.
The real deal is a population execution.
Sponsored by the corporate, committed by the government.
Supported by the ignorant, inflicted on the innocent.
We subsidise the arms trade making sure they get paid to fund another air raid for this bullshit terror crusade.

We don’t want your war [No, no, no, no]
Governmental misleaders
We don’t want your war
We see through your propaganda.
We don’t want your war
We uncover the true agenda
We don’t want your war

Murder
Politians - they just keep on lying.
Soldiers and their victims - they just keep on dying.
Manipulate the papers and the broadcast news,
Telling us of heroes who can never lose.
Speeches of support are no protection from an AK-47 or a suicide bomb.
Never at the front, all they wanna do instead is salute and pin a medal on our glorious dead.
Murder
Nationalistic Ha! Patriotic Ha!
Jingoistic Yeah! Xenophobic Yeah!
It aint about freedom. It aint about health.
It aint about justice. It’s all about wealth.
Wealth and power and greed and more.
They’re the only business that they’re fighting for.
War on terror, war on drugs.
Are we gonna wage war on the corporate thugs?

CHORUS

Politicians telling me this is the way it has to be.
So build more tanks and buy more guns to arm your daughters and your sons.
And pray the day will never come - A body bag for your loved one.
Did you get to say goodbye before that loved one had to die?
